Introduction to Working in an LGBT Affirmative Therapeutic Approach
The approaches that mental health professionals have taken with regards to working with Sexual Minorities (LGBT identified clients) in counselling and psychotherapy have changed greatly over the past 25 years.
Sexual Minorities were once seen as being pathological in nature-either a sociopathic personality disorder or a sexual deviation. Homosexuality is no longer conceptualized as a "disorder" and instead is viewed within the broader context of human diversity. Even with such changes, some mental health professionals nonetheless retain subtle biases against working with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender clients, and/or often lack the necessary information for working with them effectively.
This one-day training course will look at our understanding around working with sexual minorities and is designed for counsellors and therapists either working with LGBT clients already or those wishing to commence work with LGBT clients.
